We used any reason to have a party. A Wild Party Variety Hour, to be precise. Birthdays, holidays, full moons, heck, when Nathan, one of the hosts, moved to China, we had a Wild Party Variety Hour: Communist Edition.
But the first-ever Birthday-themed show was in honor of Bethany, who happens to be one of the very few people in this world born on February 29th. Looking back at this footage, it’s astounding how mercilessly time changes and ages us all and how much less politically correct we all were. This show features Burlesque, Live Action Cartoon Comedy, Stand-up, Music, and the Shenanigans of our faithful hosts (before one of them moves to China and becomes a commie. J/K, Nathan, we love you!)
Enjoy this live production from the very early years. It was the first ever recorded Wild Party as we shifted from a once-a-week to a once a once-a-month model. Productions gradually became a lot more involved after that with through lines and recurring characters. But this was 2010. Prop Thtr had opened its arms and accepted a bunch of traveling weirdoes and their bus to park behind its space and remain for yearrrrrs. They allowed us to sell our own cheap PBRs and gave us a key so we could stay as long as we wanted to. We saw many a sunrise out of that beloved Avondale space. Driving by it in the post-covid era, after it had shuttered its doors, still gives a tinge of nostalgia - magic of the best kind happened there.
So this post goes out to Prop Thtr and to Bethany - wherever you are, Happy Birthday, you leap year marvel, you!
